Vintage chandelier Sputnik by Fontana Arte, Italy 1960s, mid-century Italian modern
Vintage art glass chandelier Sputnik by Fontana Arte made in Italy in the 1960s.
Fontana Arte was founded in 1932 by Luigi Fontana and Gio Ponti. Luigi Fontana came from a family with a long history in the glass industry, and Gio Ponti was an architect and designer. Together, they aimed to blend traditional Italian craftsmanship with modern design principles. Fontana Arte is known for its innovative and forward-thinking design approach. Their creations often feature clean lines, geometric shapes, and a focus on functionality, making them emblematic of mid-century modern design. Crafted using the unique "serrated" (or "scapellato" in Italian) glass-cutting technique, this chandelier features an array of meticulously hand-cut and hand-chipped glass rhombuses, artfully arranged in a spherical formation.
The lamp is in very good vintage condition. The metal has a natural patina.
